Plane makes emergency landing south of Amarillo, Texas.
A small, single-engine homebuilt plane was damaged during an emergency landing southeast of Amarillo, Texas yesterday (July 11, 2010) just before 5:30 PM. David M. Robb, the pilot of the Van’s Aircraft RV-6 (registration N579DR) was OK after the incident, but the aircraft was damaged.
According to reports, the pilot departed Tradewinds Airport (TDW) in Amarillo, Texas for a local flight to the Palo Duro Canyon State Park area. On the return flight and while flying at 2,000 feet, the plane’s engine failed and the pilot searched for a place to force land the plane. The pilot landed in a clear strip of land near the intersection of Whitaker Road and E. Farm to Market Road 1151. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), after touching down, the plane ran into a muddy puddle and nearly flipped over. The strip of land turned out to be a runway under construction.
