Father, 3 children survive rugged crash landing.
A small, single-engine plane crashed in a rugged area near the La Plata Recreation Area, about fifteen miles northeast of Huntsville, Utah. The accident happened yesterday (June 30, 2010) just before 11:50 AM. Pilot Ted Meek and his three children survived the crash during an emergency landing with minor injuries. The aircraft involved is a Cessna 175 Skylark (registration N9247B) and it suffered severe damage.
According to the family of the pilot, the flight departed Morgan County Airport (42U) in Morgan, Utah and was headed to North Big Horn County Airport (U68) in Cowley, Wyoming. While reports are varied, the pilot was having trouble flying over the mountains in the area and may have had engine problems (some reports claim strong downdrafts brought the plane down). Whatever the reason, the pilot was forced to make an emergency landing in mountainous terrain. The pilot force landed the aircraft in a 20° slope clearing, but a wing hit a tree and a section of the landing gear was damaged. The plane came to rest upside down. The pilot then contacted his brother and asked him to call the authorities. The plane was found a little more than an hour later.
The children have not been identified, but are two boys (10 and 2 years-old), as well as a seven years-old daughter. The aircraft is owned by the pilot’s father John C. Meek.

What a tragedy for the whole family… I’m so glad they are alright. The event was surely honor experience especially to the children. I just hope they were not traumatized and seriously injured. Children are so helpless in such conditions.
