Four dead in Arkansas plane crash.
A small, single-engine plane crashed in the Howard County State Wildlife Management Area, southwest of Umpire, Arkansas yesterday (June 13, 2010) at 9:30 AM. Four people were killed when the Piper PA-28-181 Archer II (registration N6076H) crashed for unknown reasons.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft had departed J. Lynn Helms Sevier County Airport (DEQ) in DeQueen southwest of the crash site and was headed for an airport in northern Arkansas. The plane crashed for unknown reasons. Mike Hunt (who is believed to be the pilot) was killed, along with Terri Hunt, Carl Davis, and Carolyn Davis. The plane crashed about 8 miles southwest of Umpire, Arkansas near US Highway 278.
A local resident heard the airplane flying past and then a thud, which prompted her to alert local authorities. The fact that she heard the plane makes an engine failure less likely, but it cannot be ruled out this early in the investigation. There were low, overcast clouds in the area at the time of the accident.
