Plane crashes off Malaysian coast.
A small, single-engine plane crashed off the northern coast of the main island of the Langkawi archipelago in Malaysia today (March 15, 2010) at 9:40 AM local time. The flight instructor and student aboard the Diamond Aircraft DA40 TDI Diamond Star were OK after ditching the aircraft in the sea.
According to reports, the pair departed on a routine training flight from Langkawi International Airport (LGK; ICAO: WMKL) and headed north of the island. The diesel powered engine developed some kind of problem and the instructor decided to try and make the beach near Tanjung Rhu/Pasir Hitam. Unfortunately, the aircraft ended up in the ocean less than a mile off shore. Local fishermen noticed the accident and helped get the occupants to safety.
The Diamond Star in the accident belongs to Halim Mazmin (HM) Aerospace Sdn Bhd Flight Training Center based out of WMKL. Malaysia’s Department of Civil of Aviation is investigating the accident.
