A North American P-51D Mustang (registration N514NH – see video above) crashed into a hangar in Chandler, Arizona yesterday (March 11, 2010) at 1:15 PM local time. Naziruden “Nazzi” Hirani was killed in the crash at Stellar Airpark (P19).
There were varying witness statements so it is difficult to pin down what happened, but there were various people, including the pilot’s wife, who saw what happened. Some witnesses claim they heard sputtering engine noises or a rough running engine as the plane made a low pass before it came in to land, but others say the pilot was landing the aircraft under normal circumstances when he lost control of the plane. The plane then did cartwheels into a low brick wall and crashed into the hangar.
“Su Su”, as the olive painted P-51D was called, was completely destroyed in the crash and the hangar suffered heavy damage.
