A Dassault Falcon 20D (registration N28RK) crashed into a remote corner of Great Inagua Island in the Bahamas for unknown reasons late on Thursday (December 17th). The accident happened at approximately 7:30 local time. While reports from the island are very few and vary quite a bit in the facts, it appears the business jet was carrying two pilots (some early reports cite two additional victims, but this has not been confirmed). The pilots were identified as Trudy Camilo and Harold (Hal) Mangels.
The flight departed on Thursday from La Isabela International Airport (MDJB) at 6:41 PM EST on its way to Fort. Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE), but crashed soon after as it entered the Bahamas archipelago. I am unsure about who has jurisdiction in this accident, but it appears the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute is investigating the accident (IDAC for its Spanish initials – Instituto Dominicano de Aviación Civil). Great Inagua is in the southernmost group of islands in the Bahamas.
Witnesses in the island and in the sky (at least one MD80 pilot) described seeing a fireball in the sky before the aircraft fell from the sky into the remote part of the island 15 miles from the settlement of Mathew Town.
The Falcon 20 is registered to FL Aviation Group Inc. and in a trust operated by Wells Fargo.
