The following are summaries of accidents that have occurred in the past few days. Velozia Air may expand on each individual post in an upcoming post. All accidents will be followed up as soon as their respective investigations advance a bit.
December 13, 2009
Socata TBM-850 – Truckee, California: Woodside, CA mayor Dave Burow and pilot Charles Simmons survived a forced landing in a turboprop TBM-850 (registration N850MT) after an apparent loss of control on the second landing attempt at Truckee Tahoe Airport (TRK). The aircraft came to rest in a snowy field between Highway 267 and Brockway Rd. The accident occurred at 5:40 PM PST. Both occupants suffered minor injuries and the aircraft had substantial damage.

Aerospatiale/Eurocopter AS350 Ecureuil – Hana (Maui), Hawaii: An AS350 (registration N87EW) crashed in Hana, Maui between Hana Airport (HNM) and Hana School during an FAA pilot proficiency check. The helicopter, operated by sightseeing operator Sunshine Helicopters, was forced to land after an unknown mechanical failure. The pilot and FAA inspector, who have not been identified, suffered minor to moderate injuries. The inspector suffered a badly broken ankle. The helicopter departed Kahului Airport (OGG) at 1:15 PM local time and the accident occurred at 1:45 PM. The tail of the helicopter broke from impact forces and the floats were deployed during the crash landing. Sunshine helicopters has been involved in two recent accidents. Pilot error led to an April 2007 crash landing in Makawao and turbine fatigue contributed to another crash landing in Haleakala in January 2006.

Robinson R-44 – Montreal, Canada: A Robinson R-44 (registration C-GDSF) operated by TVA News was involved in a forced landing near the Bonaventure Expressway in Montreal, Canada. Pilot Antoine Leger and reporter Rejean Laveille survived the crash, although the reporter suffered some major injuries. The helicopter crashed soon after takeoff for unknown reasons. Canada’s Transportation Safety Board will investigate the accident.

Cessna 206 – Cocklebiddy, Australia: A single-engine, high-wing Cessna 206 crashed for unknown reasons today near Cocklebiddy in southwestern Australia (in the Nullarbor Plain) while on a survey flight. The pilot survived the accident and was picked up and taken to a hospital by helicopter. The accident occurred this morning and not much information is available. An emergency locator transmitter helped locate the downed pilot, as well as information being relayed by another plane (possibly Qantas) that was in contact with the downed pilot.
