A US pilot was killed when the single-engine plane he was piloting crashed into the waters off Chub Cay in the Berry Islands of the Bahamas.  The plane went down sometime after 8:00 AM local time on December 12th.  The Wheeler Express (registration N93HE) was piloted by Lawrence Littlefield of Boynton Beach, Florida.

Not much is known about the accident, but the pilot departed Palm Beach County Park Airport (also known as Lantana Airport – LNA) before heading east to the Bahamas.  The cause of the crash is unknown.

The Wheeler Express is a homebuilt aircraft sold by various incarnations of the Express Aircraft Company LLC.  The company itself has been riddled with a history of bankruptcies and other problems stemming from various high-profile accidents in the aviation community.  The particular Express in this accident, the Huber Hartmut Express, did have some problems during its test phase, but the problems appear to have been corrected by the original builder.

Last year, Mr. Littlefield was involved in another aircraft accident.  That time, he was flying with pilot Bob Jeffrey in a PZL TS-11 Iskra (a tandem-seat military jet trainer from Poland) when the aircraft had to perform an emergency landing in State Route 70.  Both pilots walked away from the April 7th accident OK.
