A late look at MacDill AirFest 2009.

Submitted by Fernando Montalvo on November 25, 2009 – 11:12 pmNo Comment

A great Velozia Air tradition is the posting of airshow photos months after the airshow passes.  I don’t exactly do it intentionally, it just happens that way.  I figured today would be a great way to continue this by posting pictures from the MacDill Air Force Base AirFest 2009 show.  MacDill’s airshow is one of my favorites and it is the airshow I have attended the most times.  As with most of the major military shows here in the US, the flight line is lined with an impressive count of aircraft and the performers and demos rarely disappoint.  This year wasn’t a particularly good year for MacDill fans as crazy high winds hampered the performers (it rendered some of the performances practically useless), but that didn’t stop the pilots from trying anyway.

MacDill’s AirFest is a highly-organized airshow and is completely free to the public (parking and admission).  About the only complaint I have is exiting the parking as it nearly comes to a standstill as everyone tries to leave at the same time.  About 750,000 people attend this airshow.  Still, it is something just about every big airshow has to deal with.

I don’t really have many pictures from this airshow, but on the next one I cover (Air Power over Hampton Roads 2009) I’ll make it up to you all.

A Fairchild Republic A-10 Warthog (Thunderbolt II) waiting for its flight demo. First time I got a chance to catch this particular flight demo as it had evaded me for some time. Its always impressive to see the firepower of this ground support attack aircraft. (Photo by Itzel Guillen for Velozia Air)

An F-15 awaits its turn. F-15s are kind of a given at airshows, but that doesn't take away from their demo flights. (Photo by Itzel Guillen for Velozia Air)

Missing from the pictures were quite a few planes, including the F-18 Super Hornet, C-17, a B-1B fly-by, the USAF Thunderbirds, and more.  Hopefully, next year I’ll get more pictures.

By the way, for those of you reading this tommorrow, Happy Thanksgiving!
