The following are summaries of accidents that have occurred in recent days.  Some of these accidents may be covered in detail on future posts.  Velozia Air will update the information pertaining to each accident as each accident’s investigation progresses.

August 25, 2009

Sport Flight Astra HKS Ultralight – Bloomfield, Indiana: The ultralight (registration N940Z) crashed for unknown reasons after it initiated a left bank while flying over Shawnee Field.  According to witnesses everything appeared normal with the aircraft before the accident happened.  The ultralight crashed into a soybean field and both occupants (David Johnson and Mark Muzii) were killed.  The Astra was severely damaged and was mostly crumpled.

Cessna 172RG Cutlass – Rockaway Township, New Jersey: The Cessna 172RG (registration N6117R) made an emergency landing in Rockaway Town Square Mall’s parking lot after the pilot reported that he was having engine problems.  The nose gear apparently hit a tree during the landing and the plane skidded on its nose and rear wheels before coming to a rest.  Both occupants aboard the aircraft were fine.  The plane had departed Essex County Airport.

Aeroflot Boeing 737 – Chelyabinsk Airport, Russia: (From Aviation-Safety.net)  The Boeing 737 suffered a tail strike while landing.

Cessna 170B – near Lake Hood, Anchorage, Alaska: The Cessna 170B (registration N6073V) crashed immediately after takeoff from Lake Hood’s gravel strip for what appears to be an engine area related issue.  Witnesses say the engine cowling appeared to come off the plane after takeoff.  The plane crash landed in a boggy area and pilot Carl Fundeen survived, but was seriously injured.  The pilot had to be cut out of the wreckage.  Some witnesses say the pilot attempted a left turn back to the airport after the engine problems.

Outback Aircraft Savannah – Salisbury-Ocean City Wicomico Airport, Maryland: The high-wing plane (registration N184SA) landed hard in the runway while performing touch and gos and damaged the propeller and nose-gear.  It is unclear if the hard landing was the result of some mechanical difficulty.  William F. Hagg Jr. was the pilot aboard the aircraft.

Kitfox – Targu Mures, Romania: Aircraft (registration YR-5224) crashed after takeoff from Targu Mures for unknown reasons while on a training flight.  The pilot of the aircraft that departed just before this one called noticed the crash and called emergency services from the air.  The pilot survived, but was seriously injured.

Unspecified Parasail – Lenawee County, Missouri: Parasail crashed while attempting to avoid power lines.  The parasail operator was seriously hurt.

Destiny 2000 Powered Parachute and Phantom Ultralight – Arcanum, Ohio: Terry Price was on final approach and at approximately 50 feet above ground level (AGL) in his powered parachute (N5604B) when, apparently, Thomas Jackson (in the Phantom) collided with him from the side.  The powered parachute fell from the sky killing the pilot, while the Phantom crash landed an cart wheeled in a corn field.  The pilot of the Phantom suffered a broken jaw and lacerations.  He is expected to recover soon.  The two pilots were friends.

Aerospatiale AS350 B2 Ecureuil – Perryville, Arkansas: The helicopter (N166EH) crashed while attempting to land five miles east of Perryville.  The helicopter´s rotor may have hit a rock face.  The pilot and three passengers were OK after the accident.
