Here are the latest reports from recent accidents that have occurred worldwide.  Some of these accidents may be covered in detail on future posts and all will be updated as their respective investigations progress.

August 23, 2009

Van’s RV-6 – St. Charles Parish, Louisiana: The Van’s RV-6 (registration N352JB) veered off the runway on takeoff and crashed into trees.  Wendell Lee Collins and James Miller, who was the owner of the aircraft, were killed in the crash.  This particular RV-6 was built by Joseph Brown Jr.  Winds were light at the time of the accident.

Piper PA-25 Pawnee – Creswell, Oregon: The Pawnee (registration N6353Z) crashed during glider towing operations.  The aircraft had just taken off from Creswell Airport and was towing a glider.  The plane crashed for unknown reasons, but the glider managed to release from the aircraft and land safely (not sure if that happened before or after the Pawnee’s troubles started).  The plane crashed in a field and started a large grass fire which left only the frame of the aircraft in its aftermath.  The pilot was killed in the crash or post-crash fire.  The Piper Pawnee is a crop duster-type aircraft popular with agricultural operations.

Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser – Dillingham, Alaska: The PA-12 (registration N92770) flipped over as it landed twenty miles north of Dillingham, Alaska.  The PA-12 Super Cruiser is an upgraded Piper Cub.  The two occupants of the aircraft were fine.

Cessna 150J – Fairmont, Georgia: Aircraft lost engine power and performed an emergency landing near Fairmont, Georgia.  The pilot was the sole occupant of the Cessna 150 (registration N61022).

Cessna 182H Skylane – Weeping Water, Nebraska: The aircraft went off the end of the runway on takeoff and into an embankment.  There was a pilot and four skydivers inside the plane and they all walked away from the crash.  The aircraft’s registration is N1921X.

Piper PA-28 Cherokee – Glendale, Arizona: The Piper PA-28 (N424PA) was landing at Glendale airport when it lost the right landing gear and veered to the right.  This is (at least) the second time an aircraft loses its landing gear at Glendale.  The pilot was the sole occupant of the aircraft.

Piper PA-22 Tri-Pacer – Tacoma Narrows, Washington: The pilot lost control of the aircraft on landing and suffered a hard landing.  The propeller and right main gear were severely damaged.   One person was aboard the Piper PA-22 Tri-Pacer (N6038D).

Boeing 757-200 – Los Angeles, California: An American Airlines Boeing 757 (registration N663AM) made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) after the flight crew declared an emergency.  AA Flight 414 was had departed San Diego at 3:43 PM and was headed to Dallas/Ft. Worth when it was diverted.  The plane landed at LAX at 4:46 PM.  The flight crew had reported a problem with the aircraft’s right wing.  Five feet of the aircraft’s trailing edge slats were damaged.  There were six crew and 188 passengers on board.  No word yet on how the damage occurred.

Cessna 172 Skyhawk – Olive Branch, Mississippi: A Cessna 172 Skyhawk (registration N3508T) was landing at Olive Branch Airport when it was struck by a Canadian goose.  Why does it seem like anytime a plane gets hit it’s a Canadian goose?  The pilot was the only one aboard and the plane was able to land OK.

Pegasus 532 Powered Parachute – Wynoka, Oklahoma: Even when you already have your parachute deployed and when that parachute has an engine, things aren’t exactly safe.  The pilot lost control on takeoff and crashed into a privacy fence.
