Flying Across America to promote general aviation.
While Velozia Air deals with many issues in aviation, the site has little by little evolved into one that deals mostly with aviation accident posts. This happened because those are the posts that the readers here in Velozia most read, request, and comment on. Unfortunately, all these accidents don’t do much to promote aviation to the general public and many of the accident articles in fact can end up being a little detrimental to the industry, even if they help others understand accidents and aviation safety issues. So I thought I would post a little info on a couple of pilots and a special flight next year that aims to promote general aviation. While some say that general aviation has taken a beating lately, I say this has always been the case and promoting its benefits is very important.
Vincent Lambercy, a private pilot who lives near Frankfurt, Germany and writes at Plasticpilot.net, and Jason Schappert, an experienced flight instructor from Ocala, Florida who writes at MzeroA.com and operates Schapp Aviation, will be flying across the United States next year looking to promote general aviation. The round-trip flight will start right here in Daytona Beach, Florida and will continue on to Catalina Island, CA, making promotional stops along the way.
While you can read the details of the flight at the Flying Across America website HERE, I’ll summarize it by saying both pilots aim to tout the benefits of general aviation to local communities, as well as unite pilots and their communities. Those of you pilots who read Velozia are well aware how airports and aviation are constantly assailed because local area residents feel the aircraft flying over their heads are mostly a nuisance and safety hazard. In the same way, those of you who are not aviation enthusiasts and read this blog can use this opportunity to get some answers and a better understanding of your concerns regarding general aviation. This is a great way to bring pilots, their communities, and the media together.
So head on over to the Flying Across America site and learn a little more about this project. You can also make small donations to the project to help Vincent and Jason along the way (you can donate as little as 1 mile for $3.75). The website will be listing the stops the flight plans to make. The first stop will be in Destin, Florida where a local FBO will be helping with free fuel and support.
Aviation Week did a great job describing the Flying Across America project and you can find that post HERE.
I wish Vincent and Jason the best of luck reaching all the goals of this project and their “secret” mission of possibly making donations to aviation charities.
