A pilot was killed Tuesday night (June 16, 2009) when his single-engine Cessna 150L (registration N66016) crashed for unknown reasons near Rockwall, Texas. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the aircraft was reported missing Wednesday morning after the pilot’s wife noticed her husband had not returned from a flight the night before. Flight instructor Jim “Jimmy” Gaston Phillips was supposed to pick up a student at Terrel Municipal Airport (TRL) so they could practice night takeoffs and landings, but the student stated that Phillips never made it.
Phillips operated Phillips Flying Ranch Airport (T48) from which he took off sometime Tuesday night. Authorities located the Cessna 150L close to the departure end of the runway at 9:00 AM Wednesday morning. The plane was found upside down, with the engine area completely crushed, and the tail section somewhat separated. Jimmy G. Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene. There was no evidence of a fire and it is completely unknown at the moment why the airplane crashed.

Jim was my primary /instrument flight instructor and a good friend. He was an excellent pilot and is sorely missed.
Rest in Jesus’s arms, Jim – I’ll ” see you in the morning”.
Sandy,
Sorry to hear you lost a friend in this accident.
