Update: A more up to date (and corrected) version of this accident report can be found HERE. It includes information published in the NTSB’s preliminary report.
A high-wing, single-engine airplane crash landed on a North Carolina dirt road after suffering an engine failure. The accident happened yesterday (May 17, 2009) in the morning and the sole occupant was OK. The aircraft involved was a Kitfox IV with registration N92RG .
According to the pilot, Leland Ridel, engine troubles forced him to attempt an emergency landing on the very narrow Sailboat Road in Camden County, North Carolina (near the state’s eastern coastline). As he attempted the emergency landing, the aircraft struck some trees that lined the road and the aircraft was forced into the trees.
Apparently, the pilot had taken off out of Northeastern Regional Airport (EDE) in Edenton, North Carolina and was headed towards Dare County Regional Airport (MEO, MQI) in Manteo, NC.
