An airplane has crashed into a field in Chesnee, South Carolina at 12:15 PM EDT today.  The aircraft, a Grumman American AA-1B (N8998L) crashed near the intersection of Peachtree Road and Ryan Road.  The plane’s sole occupant was killed in the crash.  The pilot’s name has not been released by authorities.

While it is too early to determine what may have happened, the airplane crashed immediately past a group of trees and at the beginning of an open field.  Only the front area of the airplane is crushed from impact, up until about where the wings start.  Debris is not scattered and the aircraft is relatively intact.  The pilot may have been trying to make an emergency landing at the open field and hit the trees just before the field, but, of course, that’s speculation.
