I held off on writing about this accident as I waited to see if any more information was released, but I decided to post it before the news gets any older:

An airplane crashed in Montana on Wednesday (April 1, 2009) adding to the slew of fatal accidents that have taken place there over the past month.  This accident took place at the Hungry Horse Reservoir (35 miles southeast of the Hungry Horse Dam).  The aircraft, a Maule M-4 Strata Rocket (N2007U) crashed into the ice covering the lake close to 5:00 PM at which point the emergency locator transmitter (ELT) activated.  The ELT was picked up by a satellite and search and rescue efforts began.

Pilot Hugh Rogers was found dead in the accident scene at 12:30 AM on Thursday.  It took authorities a bit to get to the site due to heavy snowfall and very limited visibility (which may even have contributed to the crash).  At this point, it is unknown why the aircraft crashed.

It was Rogers’s 50th birthday and friends and family were waiting for him with a surprise birthday party.
